Kun George Orwell sai 40-luvulla päähänpiston alkaa kirjoittaa kirjaa, ei hän luultavasti arvannut, että tarjoaisi myöhemmin lähtölaukauksen myös yhden 2000-luvun suosituimman tosi-tv-formaatin syntyyn. Alankomaalaisen – luonnollisesti myös miljardööri – John de Molin kehittämä, nykyään 127 eri maassa paikallisesti pyörivä Big Brother perustuu orwellmaiseen isoveli valvoo -konseptiin, jossa ihmisiä tarkkaillaan ympärivuorokautisesti. BB on saavuttanut yleisönsä ja palstatilansa myös Suomessa, ja uutispimennossa eläville tiedoksi, että juurikin eilen starttasi Suomen kahdeksas BB-kausi. Hurraa!

Ennen kuin alan kertoa, kuinka minä ja sivistyneet akateemiset kaverini emme siis oikeasti seuraa BB:n kaltaista valmiiksi pureskeltua populaarihömppää, (vaikka se pisamapäinen Sauli oli kyllä söpö ja se pikkareistaan helmiä vetelevä blondi sen sijaan aika ärsyttävä…Mut siis kaikista kivoin oli kyllä se toinen blondi..se söpö, joka puhui eestiläisittäin..), niin on kuitenkin sanottava, että onhan koko ilmiö nyt vähintäänkin kiinnostava.
BB:stä ei niinkään tee kiinnostavaa se, että sitä tungetaan jokaisesta viihdetuutista tästä päivästä aina jouluun asti vaan se, että sarjaa voi tarkastella eräänlaisena ajankuvana. Sanomalla näin, en siis halua loukata sinua, joka olet kaiken tämän sekoilun yläpuolella tai viitata siihen, että julkinen peitonheiluttelu on IN ensi keväänä. Sarja nyt vain yksinkertaisesti esittelee suurelle yleisölle ihmistyyppejä, jotka eivät välttämättä tulisi valituiksi Paula-tytöiksi, vuoden urheilijoiksi tai Desperate Housewives -sarjan Breeksi – ainakaan ensimmäisellä hakukierroksella. Mutta silti nämä tyypit saavat mainosmiehet liikkeelle, suuren yleisön kiinnostuksen ja suorastaan hyväksynnän: olet ok. ( Pidetäänhän mielessä se fakta, että ei niitä BB-juttuja näin paljoa olisi, jos kukaan ei niitä lukisi.)
Alkuun BB:n ”suurta yleisöä järkyttäviä” hahmoja olivat seksuaalivähemmistöihin kuuluvat henkilöt, mutta siinä vaiheessa, kun jokainen tyttö halusi itselleen Sauli-kaverin, oli aika esitellä hahmo nimeltä maahanmuuttaja. Raksalla työskentelevä Kurdi-Aso olikin onnistunut veto, sillä tämä pokkasi voittopotin vuonna 2009. Jonkinlaiseksi BB-hahmoksi nousi myös mensalainen Esa, se takarivin hiljainen nörtti, jonka on aiemmin saattanut löytää korkeintaan Otaniemen kirjaston loisteputkien alta. Esa edusti ehkä vastakkaisinta yleiskäsitystä siitä, minkälaisia tyyppejä BB-taloon oikein hakeutuu. Viimeisimmän voittajan tausta stripparina sen sijaan sopi oikein hyvin skandaalinhakuiseen BB-konseptiin, mutta perinteistä stereotypiaa hämmensi kuitenkin voittajan rooli myös pienen lapsen äitinä. Suosittu BB-hahmo on ollut myös Niko, joka kyseenalaisti perinteisen suomalaismiehen mallin olemalla sekä hyvä jätkä että miesryhmän tanssija. Ja melkein unohtui katsojia ihastuttanut Sebastian: uskovainen absolutisti.
Big Brother winner 2009: Aso
Eli eihän tässä jää muuta vaihtoehtoa kuin seurata, minkälaiset tyypit ovat tämän kauden mieleenpainuvimmat hahmot, ja seurata ennen kaikkea sitä, minkälaisia tyyppejä suomalaiset tällä kaudella äänestävät. Sehän se vasta kiinnostavaa onkin! Ja muista: jos katsoo salaa, sitä ei lasketa.

When George Orwell first published his famous novel in 1949, he might not have realised the impact he would have on one of the most famous reality television formats of the 21st century. Orwell’s book is where the term Big Brother is from and by this is meant the 24/7 surveillance of the inhabitants. Big Brother was created by a Dutch – very rich man, for sure – called John de Mol. The first-ever version of Big Brother was broadcasted in 1999 and since then the format has become a worldwide TV franchise, that can nowadays be seen in 127 countries. For those who didnt know: The eighth Big Brother of Finland just started yesterday. Hurray!
Lovebirds Adam & Sauli
Before I start highlighting the fact that me or my highly educated friends, do not watch such a nonsense on TV ( even though we all liked the freckle-faced gay guy who is now dating Adam Lambert; and strongly disliked the blond from the last season who had hard time keeping her panties on..and how about the one from Estonia…) I must say, Big Brother and the whole phenomenon around it, is very interesting indeed.

Being in the headlines from now on till christmas doesn’t make BB such an interesting phenomenon, it is something else instead. It’s actually the fact, that somehow the reality show reveals little something about our own society and zeitgeist. Every year you meet new BB characters that wouldn’t maybe be rewarded as the most decent citizens of the year, but still, these persons steal public attention. ( Let’s keep in mind: tabloids wouldn’t focus this much on the BB people, if the readers didn’t care about it).
When I first started watching BB I remember that the most “scandalous” characters were representatives of sexual minorities. Time passed by and suddenly gay people were nothing new, every girl wanted to have a gay friend, instead. Then a new character was introduced to the Finnish audience: an immigrant, turkish-looking guy called Aso who actually won the BB 2009. Additionally, another BB character worth mentioning is a nerd called Esa. Usually people think that someone participating the show must be low-educated and somewhat stupid, but Esa showed that exception proves the rule: he was a member of highly respected Mensa. Addition to this, there were also a religious young man who didn’t drink alcohol at all and a male dancer who became very popular nationwide ( despite the fact he was a MALE dancer aka antistereotype of a Finnish man).

The wide range of controversial BB characters of the past invite me to watch this season’s BB too. Let me conclude this Big Brother post by saying, that the most interesting thing is not the people of different backgrouonds, but the result. Cannot wait to see, what kind of characters are going to win the hearts of the Finnish BB spectators this year. From what I’ve seen in the past, it won’t be anything mainstream.
